Thankful for the Little Things

Today’s discussion post is about appreciating the little things in life. The small moments or things that make you smile. That warm your heart.

For me, today, that is reading.

I think about a lot of things while I read. And in between the books too.

Recently, I’ve been appreciating what books and reading have done for my life, so I’d like to share some of that here.

“You know you’ve read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend.”

Paul Sweeney

I’ve been a reader since I was about 4. So that is quite a few years to be engaged in an activity or hobby that brings me joy. And sometimes I forget that the joy I get from reading a great book is created by someone else.

I wanted to express my gratitude for all of the hardworking and skilled authors and publishers and editors and all of the other people that make books possible. Thank you for dedicating your lives so that others can reap what you’ve sown.

I can’t begin to imagine what authors must do to go from an idea for a story to getting the finished version in my hands. It truly is amazing and I am grateful.

There are few things more satisfying than curling up in my recliner chair with a soft blanket and a book while my dog sleeps soundly at my feet and my husband plays video games on his computer. A coffee-scented candle burning on the counter and the twinkle of small white lights flickering from the staircase railing.

Getting lost in a new world with new people that will always be there when I’m ready to come back. Picking up right where I left off and immediately falling into a hidden world full of mysteries and suspense.

Reading is magically wonderful because it transports you to a new world. It lets you walk in the shoes of a thousand people. It teaches you what you didn’t know you didn’t know.

“Literature is the most agreeable way of ignoring life.”

Fernando Pessoa

When I read, I am empathetic. I am thoughtful. I am creative. I am a part of something bigger than myself.

Reading truly is one of the greatest pleasures in life. Thank you to all who make it possible. I appreciate what you do. I am grateful for the gift you give me in your books.

I am thankful for reading. It is one of the biggest little things on planet Earth.
